Why should I care about saving energy at home?

It is well known that climate change is starting to affect us all. The impact on our planet is being felt across everything from ecosystems and species to icecaps and forests. The facts are difficult to argue against.

Awareness and a willingness to act are now higher profile than ever. On Friday, 20 September 2019, the world witnessed one of the biggest global days of action with hundreds of thousands of young people around the world taking part in climate strike marches that demanded international leaders act on climate change.

These passionate protests highlight our desire to be more environmentally friendly, and people are increasingly asking how they can contribute to the fight against climate change. Many households are recycling more and changing their habits (such as non-plastic straws and reusable bags) but the main causes of carbon emissions are yet to be tackled.

Did you know that more than one-third of the average carbon footprint per person comes from direct energy use? This commonly means the energy used in households for activities like cooking, lighting and heating.

That means that changes to the way we use energy such as electricity in our households could have a major impact on emissions; especially with high energy usage items like kettles, ovens, fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers.

How can you make a significant impact?:

Here are a few of the most impactful ways that you can make a difference at home:

Be Energy Wise

For instance, turning off lights when not being used, avoiding leaving appliances on standby, boiling only the amount of water you need, and taking shorter showers. According to the Energy Saving Trust, these actions could save you up to £62 a year at the same time as reducing carbon emissions.

Action Average saving per year*
Turn off lights £14
Avoid appliance standby £30
Boil only the water you need £6
Shorter showers £12
Total £62

Choose clean energy

Choose a 100% (certified) renewable energy supplier; all the energy we use in our homes leads to additional carbon emissions, except if it comes from certified clean sources.
