National Grid ESO’s Expansion of Demand Flexibility Service: A Positive Step Forward
The National Grid ESO has announced the expansion of the Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) starting in 2024. This significant development not only underscores the importance of consumer participation in energy flexibility but also highlights the potential for greener and more cost-effective energy solutions. It also highlights that demand side response (DSR) in the domestic market is an important part of the UK’s future energy system by ESO that can help deliver Net Zero.
A bit of background
For those of you unfamiliar with ESO’s Demand Flexibility Service or DFS as it is commonly referred to, let me explain. Back in November 2022, National Grid ESO introduced the service to run between November and March to provide energy security to the UK due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affecting supply from mainland Europe. ESO set about meeting this aim by helping to reduce pressure on the electricity grid during the busiest time of day when households are using energy at the same time.
In essence, the DFS rewards households for reducing their electricity usage during events, usually lasting 1 hour. They are notified by a DFS provider, such as equiwatt or their energy supplier. This means that households can help play their part to reduce strain on the grid and get paid for their efforts. You can find out more about it in our recent blog here.
A Milestone in Energy Flexibility
The National Grid ESO’s decision to evolve DFS into a year-round service is a monumental step in the right direction. By recognising the crucial role that consumers play in balancing the grid, ESO is paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
The expansion of the Demand Flexibility Service marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards a smart and flexible power system. It empowers households and businesses to contribute actively to grid stability while earning rewards for their participation.
equiwatt’s Contribution and Commitment
At equiwatt, we have always believed in the power of community-driven energy solutions. Our powerDOWN events over the past two winters are a testament to this belief. Through these events, our customers helped to shift an impressive 54 MWh of energy and earned over £93,000 in rewards this past winter. This achievement not only demonstrates the effectiveness of demand flexibility but also showcases the significant financial benefits for participating households.
The Future of DFS and equiwatt’s Role
The updated DFS, designed to operate all year round along, provides a continuous opportunity for consumers to participate in energy flexibility initiatives. Furthermore, the introduction of ‘Turn Up’ events, where households will be rewarded for preventing wind energy from going to waste, provides another opportunity for households to help the UK’s energy system as it moves towards renewable energy and away from fossil fuels. This evolution will enable consumers to stack DFS with other revenue streams such as those run by Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), enhancing the overall value of their participation.
By participating in DFS, consumers are not just contributing to grid stability; they are also taking a step towards a greener future. The reduction in fossil fuel reliance directly translates to a decrease in carbon emissions, making our energy consumption more sustainable, something that is vital for all of us living in Great Britain as we seek to combat climate change and make Net Zero a reality.
equiwatt’s Next Steps
When it comes to what is next for equiwatt, we are committed to expanding our services to ensure that more households can benefit from DFS. Our goal is to provide innovative solutions that not only support grid stability but also promote environmental sustainability and promote behaviour change around energy usage at home. By integrating new services, and partnering with new businesses, we aim to make energy flexibility a part of everyday life for our users.

Conclusion
The evolution of the Demand Flexibility Service is a clear indication of the positive changes on the horizon for the energy sector. At equiwatt, we are thrilled to be at the forefront of these changes, working alongside National Grid ESO and our community to create a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
This announcement is a win-win for everyone. It brings us closer to a future where energy flexibility is the norm, and where consumers are rewarded for their crucial role in balancing the grid. We look forward to continuing our efforts in this space and driving further innovation in energy flexibility.
