Can I connect my smart devices to equiwatt by using IFTTT?

Yes. You can use IFTTT to automatically turn on and off a range of different smart devices and integrations. Read on to learn more.

What is IFTTT?

IFTTT is short for 'If This Then That', and is an easy way to set up a variety of automations which can enable you to take part in equivents without having to lift a finger! From Tapo, Smart Life, Phillips Hue, Hive and Tado there are so many smart devices that can be connected to equiwatt to automatically take part in equivents via the IFTTT integration.

You can learn more about what IFTT is here.

How does it work?

IFTTT helps you to connect different apps and devices (e.g. your smart devices and the equiwatt app).

When you sign up for a free account, IFTTT enables you to set up your apps and devices to work together to do things they couldn't otherwise do. For example, you can set your phone to send you an SMS message when an equivent begins or get your Hive thermostat to turn the heating back on when an equivent ends.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to earn points for taking part in equivents with smart devices, you will need to have a compatible smart meter with half-hourly data connected to your equiwatt account.

Here is how it works:

1) Create a free IFTTT account. You can do this either via their site or via the app.

2) Browse the equiwatt IFTTT page (https://ifttt.com/equiwatt) on the site or app to find an automation (known as Applets) that you want to use with equiwatt.

For example:

  • Turn off hive plugs when an equivent starts
  • Turn off Smart Life devices when an equivent starts
  • Switch off SmartThings devices when an equivent starts.

3) Connect the services that are involved in the Applet or automation you want to use (e.g. equiwatt and Hive etc).

If you find an Applet that you want to use, select it and then select the 'Connect' slider to complete the integration process. Now all you need to do is to follow the onscreen instructions to set up your chosen Applet.

4) Your Applet is now set up and ready to go!

Applets and connections can be built by services or users from the Developer Dashboard. You can also create and customise your own Applets. To create your own Applet, select 'Create' at the top of the equiwatt IFTTT page. You can find out more about creating your own Applets in IFTTT's Help Center here.
