Will my fridge/freezer not use the same amount of energy saved to cool again after an Equivent?

Your fridge/freezer will need to use energy to re-cool itself but it will use cleaner energy during lower cost times.

Not all electricity is generated carbon-equally. Your appliance is turned off during an Equivent because during those peak times electricity generation is at its most carbon intense. The reason for this is that in order to meet the demand on the grid during peak times, energy companies switch on backup power plants. These are often powered by fossil fuels and are dirty and expensive to run.

By reducing electricity usage at these peak times, we can reduce the dirty CO2 pollution that is generated by these backup power plants being switched on. The more households that take part, the bigger the impact we have.

Turning off appliances at this time also saves costs for energy companies and we pass your share of incentive payments from the energy companies directly to you. Find out how here.
